How to calculate minimum unit price

The three details you need are alcohol strength, total liquid volume and the rate for the nation where the sale takes place.

Calculation guidance checked 15 October 2026 · Methods & sources

1. Find the strength and liquid volume

Read the ABV percentage and bottle or can size from the packaging. For a multipack, multiply the size per item by the number of items. For example, four 500ml cans contain 2 litres altogether.

2. Work out the alcohol units

Alcohol units = ABV × volume in millilitres ÷ 1,000. Four 500ml cans at 5% contain 10 alcohol units: 5 × 2,000 ÷ 1,000.

3. Multiply by the current MUP rate

At 65p per unit, 10 units gives £6.50. Apply the rounding rule for the correct nation. Wales uses nearest-penny rounding, with half a penny rounded up; Scotland rounds up to the next whole penny.

A common rounding difference

A 750ml bottle of 12.5% wine contains 9.375 units. At £0.65 per unit the unrounded result is £6.09375. The result is £6.09 for Welsh MUP and £6.10 for Scottish MUP.

MUP is different from RRP

MUP is a legal alcohol-pricing floor. Manufacturer recommended retail price is commercial pricing information. The ABV calculation cannot tell you a manufacturer’s RRP or your profit margin.

When a simple calculation is not enough

Mixed-strength offers, linked discounts and Scottish multipack rules need additional assessment. England and Northern Ireland are not calculated by our Wales/Scotland MUP tool; do not treat a missing result as permission to charge any price.
